They Are Playing With Our Food: Why Now is the Time to Get Self-Sufficient

If you haven't heard, there’s been a massive recall. A brand called Hormel, which produces chicken, recently recalled 5 million pounds of their chicken due to some sort of contamination.
Man, they are playing with our food, I'm telling you.
First off, this is not the first recall that has happened. There have been a lot of recalls in the past year, in the past two years, for chicken, turkey, and other products. We've seen contaminations and cross-contaminations leading to people getting sick with things like salmonella and listeriosis.
I’m going to tell you it’s time to take your food source seriously.
It's Time to Become Food Self-Sufficient

The Profit Problem
You have to realize, if you're depending on a corporation or a business to provide you with healthy food, healthy meat, or healthy vegetables, you are sadly mistaken. Everything in this country is profit-driven. They will cut whatever corners they can to make a profit and get food on the shelves, even if that food is not good foof r you. They just make sure they pass whatever minimal regulations are required.
That's why you constantly see a lot of these recalls. They’ve shown us time and time again that they will cut corners and put our health at risk.
Our Family’s Solution: Back to the Coop
My wife and I were just talking this morning about this. She hadn't even heard about the recall when she sent me a message saying, "Hey, we need to get some meat birds and start raising them". She was clear: "I don't want to buy store-bought anymore".
Something in the spirit is telling us: Let's just grow our own, process our own, and put it in the freezer.
It was right on time because I had just heard about the recall the day before.
Now, I've talked about the Cornish Cross breed in the past and how I didn't want to raise them anymore. But honestly, at this point, I'm leaning toward growing the Cornish Cross just to get meat in the freezer. However, I feel about that specific breed, it’s still a lot healthier than buying a lot of this store-bought chicken.
Think about factory-raised chicken: they are raised in factories and don’t see sunlight. They’re being pumped up with all kinds of stuff, like steroids, and they’re living in their own feces. It’s awful. Raising any meat bird breed, whether it’s the Cornish Cross or others like the Red Ranger or Rud Ranger, is 100 times healthier than buying chicken out the store.
So, we made the decision. We’re going to buy at least 25 meat birds (whatever is available). Breeds like the Cornish Cross and the Red Ranger are ready for processing from 8 to 16 weeks, and you can put them right in your freezer. We’re going to raise them, process them ourselves, and fill our freezer up.
What Can You Do?
We can't afford to be dependent anymore. We can’t be at the mercy of these corporations.
If they don’t care, you should care.
Here are a few options if you want to start ethically sourcing your food:
Find Local Farms (No Land Needed): If you don’t have land, you can Google local farms in your area. Google is free! Look up poultry farms or other farms where you can verify that the meat (chicken, beef, turkey, whatever) is being ethically sourced.
Process Your Own: Want to process your own chickens? You can go on classified sites like Craigslist or Facebook buy/sell/trade groups and look up chickens for sale. Buy them directly from the homesteader who is raising them, take them home, and process them yourself. It is not illegal to process your own meat.
Learn the Skill: If you eat meat, you need to learn how to process meat. I know some people say, "Well, I don't got the stomach for it". But if you got the stomach to eat it, you should have the stomach to process it so you can know exactly where it's coming from.
Start Small: Becoming as food self-sufficient as possible is key. It doesn't just have to be chicken. You can start with eggs. If you don’t have the space for chickens, start trying to raise quail. Quail is a small bird that provides both meat and eggs.
Go Wild: For those who eat goat, lamb, or deer meat, now is the time to start learning how to hunt. You can also buy a fishing pole and start learning how to fish to get your own fish source for the freezer.
Now is the time to start learning. Don’t think this is going to be the last recall; there’s going to be several more. Don't be the person who gets sick from eating stuff where you don’t even know where it came from.
I just want to come to y’all and let y’all know, man, they're playing in our faces. Let's get back to the land.
Remember this: He who has the power to feed us also has the power to starve us.
