The Foundation of Survival: Producing Your Own Food on the Homestead

He who has the power to feed you also has the power to starve you. A lot of this food is trying to poison us, not even trying to; they are poisoning us.

So it's important to at least learn how to grow some sort of food for yourself so you won't be at the mercy of the powers that be.

We need to change our perspective when it comes to having land and farming. It’s not just for country bumpkins, no, it's for all of us.

Expanding the Flock for Self-Sufficiency

If you’re trying to be self-sufficient, you want to provide your own food. One way we are locking that down is by expanding the flock. We are starting a new flock and just picked up some new laying hens. We got 12 new birds to add to the homestead, and eventually, I want to start selling laying hens myself, aiming to sell a thousand by 2026.

When it comes to feeding our current birds, we use Hen House Reserve. This feed is packed with proteins and healthy grains and is optimal for those dark, vibrant orange yolks. I also added crushed oyster shells, because I noticed their shells were getting a little brittle while they were laying. The oyster shell helps the eggs they lay have a hard shell.

For housing, you don't always have to build or buy new equipment. I found that you can just reuse old stuff. For nesting boxes, I’m planning to reuse an old speaker case; it has plenty of room for birds to lay eggs in.

Filling the Freezer and Harvesting Meat

We are also focused on filling the freezer! If you’re not already a part of the 90-day fill your freezer challenge, y’all should join. The goal is to fill your freezer, and that food, whether it’s meat, vegetables, fruit, or fish, has to be food that you harvested or grew yourself.

We have 30 meat birds coming in soon, and we are working to finish fencing off the chicken area and run to accommodate them. In addition to the meat birds, I’m planning to process about two goats and one lamb to fill the freezer.

When processing animals on the homestead, even the parts we don't eat serve a purpose. I make sure to give my dogs the entrails of that animal, the lungs, the windpipe, the intestines, and the stomach, also known as green tripe. They thrive on that fresh meat.

We have to get back to the land, fam. Learn how to grow some sort of food for yourself. Because if you want to homestead your lifestyle and not just a hobby, you want to be able to provide your own food and be self-sufficient. We are only growing from here.
